It is with sad hearts that we let everyone know that Richard Siemering, 58, passed away peacefully with his family at his side on Saturday July 15, 2017. Rich worked in solid waste engineering consulting for over 20 years and retired from HDR Engineering as a Solid Waste Project Manager in 2016. Rich served his country in the United States Coast Guard and went on to graduate with degrees from both Clemson University and the University of South Florida. His passion for engineering, the solid waste field, and his clients was only eclipsed by his deep love for his son, wife, family, and friends.  We wish his family strength and peace during this time of loss. He will be laid to rest with full Military Honors on Monday July 24, 2017 at the Florida National Cemetery in Bushnell, FL. A full obituary can be found at this link http://hosting-2366.tributes.com/obituary/show/Richard-A.-Siemering-105006846.

By David Biderman, Executive Director SWANA

Solid waste collection is the fifth most dangerous job in the U.S. Each week, on average, someone who works in the industry is killed, and one to three other people die in collisions with waste or recycling trucks. Who’s leading the charge to improve this safety record? SWANA! Through innovative programs such as our Safety Ambassador initiative, new classroom safety training, new safety awards and a relentless focus on reducing accidents and injuries, SWANA is committed to getting the waste sector off the list of “top 10’ most dangerous jobs. Come hear SWANA Executive Director David Biderman provide an update on SWANA’s growing safety program and share his thoughts on what employers and employees in the industry need to do at Up Your Game SWANA FL Summer Conference on July 24-26 at the Saddlebrook Resort in Tampa.

In Praise of the Garbage Collectors

National Garbage Man Day is celebrated the week of June 17th. Theirs is a tough job that makes everyone’s lives a little easier, a little cleaner and a whole lot more pleasant. Refuse collection and removal is part of the natural rhythm. In our neighborhoods, we all count on the garbage collectors to remove our discards on a weekly basis.

How much trash do we create? The Environmental Protection Agency uses a rough value of 1 ton per person per year. That doesn’t mean each person individually generates that much trash. But, each person causes that much trash to be created through their daily activities of working, eating, shopping, etc. More than half of this waste is from individual homes and the rest is a product of our businesses. Every pound of that waste is handled by a garbage collector. They work in dirty, dangerous conditions in all kinds of weather to keep our community clean.

SWANA FL is celebrating Garbage/Recycling Collectors with a photo contest. We encourage members to e-mail us photos of workers in action. Please send in your photos before June 17, 2016. The photos will be posted on SWANA FL's Facebook page. Share your photos and give your hardworking staff credit.
