SWANA & Oceans Caucus Foundation Host Congressional Briefing on Recycling

Panel addresses EPA actions and how to achieve recycling goals federally

Silver Spring, MD – The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) along with the Oceans Caucus Foundation hosted a briefing on May 26 for staff on Capitol Hill on implementation of the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA) National Recycling Strategy and 50% recycling goal.

“This briefing reflects SWANA’s continuing high profile in Washington, DC on the key advocacy issues facing the solid waste industry, including recycling,” stated Amy Van Kolken Banister, Senior Director – Air Programs at WM and Chair of the SWANA Technical Division Advocacy Committee. “SWANA will continue to devote substantial energy and resources to helping EPA implement its National Recycling Strategy.”

David Biderman, CEO and Executive Director of SWANA, moderated a panel discussion with Elizabeth Roe, President of Eco Partners, Inc.; Allison Trulock, Managing Director of Solid Waste Practice for Newgen Strategies & Solutions; David Allaway, Senior Policy Analyst for the Materials Management Program at the Oregon Department of Environmental Quality; and Ashley Krug, Market Development Coordinator, Environmental Services, City of Springfield, MO. The panel discussion explored the state of recycling in the United States and how EPA’s Strategy and recycling goals can be best achieved through local, state, and federal action.

The briefing continues the work of SWANA and the Oceans Caucus Foundation to provide insightful, balanced information on sustainable materials management and marine debris prevention to Congress, NGOs, and other industry stakeholders.

The conversation will continue at WASTECON® 2022 in San Diego, California, where public sector solid waste leaders and their teams plan sustainable futures for their communities.
