Minimum Qualifications:
Continuous employment, permanent status and one (1) year of acceptable on the job performance as a Waste Collector, Waste Attendant 1 or Waste Attendant 2 and successful completion of the Department’s Trash Truck Driver Training Program are required OR one year of experience operating medium or heavy duty automotive, or construction equipment, such as a 10 cubic yard (or larger) dump truck, 40-yard roll-off truck, water tank truck, passenger buses or similar equipment are required. Must possess a CDL/Class B or higher-rated license.

Miami-Dade County’s Department of Solid Waste Management (DSWM) is seeking qualified applicants for the full-time Trash Truck Driver position. This position is eligible for health insurance coverage immediately upon hire and offers a comprehensive on-the-job training program and future promotional opportunities.
DSWM is a great place to work. The Department provides waste collection and recycling services to more than 350,000 households in unincorporated Miami-Dade County and the following ten municipalities: Aventura, Cutler Bay, Doral, Miami Gardens, Miami Lakes, Opa-locka, Palmetto Bay, Pinecrest, Sunny Isles Beach and Sweetwater. As a Trash Truck Driver, you will play an important role in providing exceptional trash collection services that protect, preserve and improve our environment and the quality of life in our community.
Qualified applicants will be subject to a screening process including, but not limited to:
a) Verification of the current status of commercial driver license.
b) Review of the entire driving record (State of Florida and current/previous employers).
c) Structured interviews, background checks, physical, employment verification, to include attendance and disciplinary records, and a performance assessment.
As a condition of employment, applicants qualifying for positions requiring a Commercial Driver
License (CDL) will be required to sign a Release of Controlled Substances and Alcohol Test Information Form. This release form authorizes previous employers to provide to Miami-Dade County information regarding positive controlled substance test results, alcohol test results of 0.04 or greater, and/or refusals to be tested for alcohol/controlled substances. Additionally, if one of the above occurred within two years preceding the date of inquiry, proof of negative retest, documented evaluations by a substance abuse professional, and proof of rehabilitation will be required.
Work Assignments are based on operational need and be at any of the following locations: 3B Trash (South Dade), 58th Street Trash (Doral), North Dade Landfill, Resources Recovery Landfill (Doral) and South Dade Landfill. The candidate must be able to work holidays, various shifts and/or rotating schedules and at various locations as assigned. Shift assignments and days off will be based on departmental needs. Trash Truck Drivers are considered essential employees and are required to work in emergency situations such as Hurricanes, Tropical Storms and other emergencies.
NEW HIRES: Qualified applicants who successfully pass the pre-employment screening process will earn a base salary of $1,683.10 biweekly, plus $80 biweekly premium pay and an additional 8% Waste Collections Disposal pay supplement, annual merit increases based on overall Performance Evaluation of satisfactory or better, and an annual uniform maintenance allowance. DSWM WASTE BARGAINING UNIT EMPLOYEES TRASH TRUCK DRIVER TRAINING PROCESS: A limited number of training slots will be available for eligible DSWM Waste Bargaining Unit employees.
1. Eligible applicants are those employees in the classifications of Waste Attendant 1, Waste Attendant 2, or Waste Collector, with continuous employment, permanent status, and one (1) year of acceptable on-the-job performance as a Waste Attendant 1, Waste Attendant 2 or Waste Collector, on or before, May 26, 2025. Possession of a valid CDL Class B or higher license is required.
2. All applicants eligible for the program will be evaluated and ranked on a general formalized performance ranking system including seniority, administrative action (disciplinary action), and performance reports for the 12 months prior to May 26, 2025.
3. Applicants offered a training to promotion opportunity who decline the opportunity will be noted on the list and will need to wait until there is a new application window.
4. Employees placed on the training/promotion list will be subject to continued review of personnel files, driver license records and status, leave and attendance history and any adverse actions. This review may result in disapproval for this training/promotional opportunity.
5. Applicants will be selected for training in accordance with the Department’s Revised Selection Criteria of July 8, 2016.
6. Training/Promotional lists will be established for a period of one (1) year or until exhausted, whichever occurs first. However, the Lists may be extended by the Human Resources Department for an additional two (2) years, providing for a new establishment date for the List, for each year extended.
7. Employees selected for training shall receive a one (1) pay step increase from their present rate for the periods of training, to include classroom and On the Job Training. At the completion of training, a performance assessment will be given wherein employees must demonstrate knowledge and proficiency in equipment operation.
8. In the event an employee fails to accept a promotional opportunity offer after successfully completing a training program, the department, at its discretion, may deduct the employees one (1) pay step increase from his/her present rate of pay as an overpayment for the training periods.
