Senate Committee Approves SWANA-Supported Recycling Infrastructure Bill

Senate Committee Approves SWANA-Supported Recycling Infrastructure Bill

Also advances nomination of new EPA Office of Solid Waste Assistant Administrator

Silver Spring, MD – The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) applauds the U.S. Senate Committee on Environment and Public Works for voting to move forward the Recycling Infrastructure and Accessibility Act of 2022 (S.3742). SWANA supports this bill, which would establish a pilot rural recycling program at the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA).

“SWANA is very pleased that the Senate EPW Committee is taking further action to support recycling. We agree that rural communities often lack access to recycling services and this bill will provide federal support that will help expand the collection of recyclables,” stated David Biderman, SWANA Executive Director & CEO. “We urge Majority Leader Schumer to bring this bill to the Senate floor for prompt consideration,” he added.

During the same meeting, the committee also voted to move forward with the nomination of Dr. Carlton Waterhouse as Assistant Administrator for the Office of Land and Emergency Management (OLEM) of the Environmental Protection Agency. SWANA looks forward to continued engagement with Dr. Waterhouse, who spoke at WASTECON® on November 3 in Orlando, Florida in 2021.
