SWANA Applauds Senate Passage of Bipartisan Infrastructure Bill
Urges House of Representatives to Pass Bill Promptly
Silver Spring, MD – The Solid Waste Association of North America (SWANA) applauds the U.S. Senate’s passage of the Infrastructure Investment and Jobs Act earlier today. The bill, which contains funding specifically allocated to improving recycling programs, should be scheduled for a vote promptly in the House of Representatives.
The Infrastructure Bill includes the RECYCLE Act, initially introduced by U.S. Senators Rob Portman (R-OH) and Debbie Stabenow (D-MI) and Representatives David Joyce (R-OH) and Dean Phillips (D-MN), which authorizes a new EPA grant program to educate Americans about their recycling programs. The bill fully funds the program at $15 million per year for five years.
“SWANA played an integral role encouraging the inclusion of the RECYCLE Act in the Infrastructure Bill,” stated David Biderman, SWANA Executive Director and CEO. “Improving our nation’s recycling programs will reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve the environment, and create jobs.”
SWANA will continue to support appropriate federal efforts to improve the U.S. recycling system, including EPA’s impending release of the National Recycling Strategy. The Strategy is expected to provide a roadmap for how the United States will achieve EPA’s goal of recycling fifty percent of municipal solid waste by 2030.
